Edition #16 – Numbers – Open Submissions

We all work with numbers, it cannot be helped, we are numerous beings! But what happens when artists consciously dive into the world of numbers? What happens to the psyche and our realities when numbers become a prominent point of focus? What do we have to learn from numbers appearing in nature, the golden ratio and Fibonacci.
What do numbers have to tell us on the psychological, mythical and theological planes? How can working with numbers help us to be more creative? What can numbers help us to uncover? What happens when art becomes tied up in numbers? Is there a pattern in the universe? What relevance do numbers play in your life? Are you guided by numbers?
Within your submission you might like to focus on the following questions:
How does your artwork relate to the theme of numbers?
What’s the relationship between creativity and numbers?
what is a number?
What is a humans connection to numbers?
How can numbers help us in exploring our selves and our universe?
The edition will be published online at www.wakeupscreaming.com in November.

WHAT ARE WE LOOKING FOR?
We are looking to connect with people who work with numbers, in whatever context, particularly, in a creative or psychological sense. Send some of your work, and / or sharing a short article 600 – 1200 words about your experiences and thoughts on the ideas outlined here, or even better, something that we haven’t even considered.
As usual, the pages of edition #16 will be open to submissions from artists in all forms. We are looking primarily for artist’s work and research relating to numbers. We are open to all forms of creativity that delves into the world of digits, we are looking specifically for artists working with the golden ration. Artists looking beneath the surface to find how art and the human psyche relate to numbers.
Perhaps you would like to put together some images and write some accompanying words telling us about your relationship and experiences with numbers. Check out our previous articles to get an idea of our format.
We are accepting art in all its forms: visual pieces, writing, illustration, painting, drawing, animation, music, sound, photography, video, multimedia, films, installations, movement, dance, noise, soundscapes, songs, collaborations, creative writing, poetry and short articles 600 – 1200 words.
Or any combination of the above – we particularly like amalgamation and cross-pollination between mediums.
New work, old work, published or not we are an open space designed for artists to respond honestly to interesting themes that we hope teach us something about ourselves and how to be.
Please read the full submission guidelines and some previous editions, to understand the sort of submissions we are looking for.
SUBMISSION GUIDELINES:
- Please send your submissions to Matt@wakeupscreaming.com
- Please title the email “Submissions – #16 – Numbers”
- Tell us why the theme interests you and how your work relates to the theme.
- Attach images as .jpg at min 1500px width < 1.5 mb – Important!
- Please title images like this: Artist Name and Name of Piece.jpg – Important
- Send poems in the body of the email – no more than 4 poems per submission
- Video – send a Youtube or Vimeo link
- Music, send your SoundCloud or video link.
- Include your name, the names of your works, your location
- Include a description of why the theme interests you and how your work relates, lots of suggestions above.
- Include a link to your portfolio, and social media accounts if applicable.

Why Numbers?
I recently attended a talk by Tom Bree at the Wells Cathedral, the UK’s first gothic Cathedral. Tom has spent years researching the architecture of the cathedral, understanding the maths and messages hidden within the building, the golden ratio, 5 fold symmetry, and how certain rooms and measurements within the structure related to the orbits of the Earth and Venus around the Sun, and “The Dance of Earth and Venus”.
Briefly, the points at which Venus and Earth pass in their orbit over a number of years, when linked together, forms the pentagram. I am not doing the synchronistic beauty of this, or his words and theory justice, but it was immensely inspiring, and is illustrated beautifully by the following video. I was enthralled by this, and in that gobsmacked moment, sat in the majesty of this grand Cathedral, I knew that the next edition should be dedicated to numbers. So here we are.

Wake Up Screaming is an arts magazine released with each New Moon, providing the editor and contributing artists with four week periods to explore and respond to themes relating to art and psychology, creativity and consciousness, waking up and approaching creativity as a means of personal development.
